Lions
Lions (Panthera Leo) are classified as vulnerable on the IUCN Red List due to their declining population (a 43% decrease since the 1990s). Disease and humans are the primary cause for the decline.
The African Lion's habitat is largely grassy plains and savannahs, scrub bordering rivers and open woodlands with bushes in Sub-Saharan Africa. (These images are all from national parks and conservation areas in Tanzania). Lions are one of the most common animal symbols among human cultures, often symbolizing strength and nobility. Depictions date back to some of the earliest human cultures, with specific depictions identified as being up to 39,000 years old.
These photos are from Tanzania. Some are from Tarangire National Park, which covers a 2,850 square kilometer/1,100 square mile area, and the rest are from the Ngorogoro Conservation Area, a protected area and a World Heritage Site, and the Serengeti National Park, which is adjoined with the conservation area. To our inexperienced eye, it was difficult to tell when we were in the national park or the conservation area as the borders are marked only with small markers.
